WICHITA, Kan. — After a brief reprieve with home matches Saturday afternoon, the Newman men's and women's tennis teams are back on the road during spring break, starting a busy week with matches Monday and Tuesday.
Starting off with their Heartland Conference opener against Dallas Baptist Monday, the Jets will then stay in Texas for a Tuesday matchup against in-region foe Colorado Mesa.
The Jet women (7-2, 0-0 Heartland) are on a three-match winning streak, dropping only two points over those three wins, which came over William Jewell, Rockhurst and Colorado State-Pueblo over the past 10 days. They'll start the week with a tough matchup against the Patriots (4-4, 1-1 Heartland), who are ranked No. 42 in the nation and fifth in the South Central Region. Newman holds down the No. 7 spot in the regional ranks, looking to improve that spot before the newest set of rankings come out Wednesday.
They'll then face off against the Mavericks (10-6), who will be in the middle of a stretch of four games in four days. CMU fell 8-1 last fall to the same CSU-Pueblo team Newman topped 9-0 Saturday.
The Jet men (3-5) seem to be finding their footing, winning two of their last three times on the courts after turning back regional foe CSU-Pueblo 6-3. They'll start with a matchup against the Patriots (7-3, 0-2 Heartland, who have won four straight since falling to St. Edward's earlier this month.
Newman will then take on CMU (9-5), which beat CSU-Pueblo 6-3 back in October and is ranked No. 8 in the South Central Region.
