Newman Falls In Rematch With Emporia State

WICHITA, Kan. — After a hot start to the single nonconference game Tuesday afternoon, Newman couldn't overcome a fifth-inning rally by No. 19 Emporia State and eventually fell 7-5.

The Jets (13-8) took on the Hornets (15-5) for the last nonconference matchup for two weeks, with Chase Wilson earning the starting pitching role for NU.

Emporia State couldn't get anything going in the top of the first after getting two hits. Newman went quietly in the bottom of the first. The Hornets started things off first in the top of the second with a solo home run down the left field line to make it 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second.

Newman would answer right back in the bottom of the second, getting home fours runs to make it 4-1 after two innings. An Andrew Russell bunt to the first baseman drove in the first run for NU. Mitchell Beaudreau singled to drive in another NU run to make it 2-1. Tyler Bugner singled up the middle that drove in Russell to make it 3-1 and Beaudreau scored the last run of the inning on a wild pitch to make it 4-1 after two complete innings.

The Hornets would get back two runs in the top of the third inning. A walk with two outs and back-to-back doubles that followed cut the Jet lead to 4-3. NU would get back on the scoreboard with a solo home run to right field from Beaudreau in the bottom of the fourth that increased the lead to 5-3.

Emporia State got four runs in the top of the fifth to make it 7-5, which would eventually be the final score for the game. The Hornets scored runs off a walk, single, sacrifice fly and an error in the top of the fifth.

The Jets shut out the Hornets from the sixth inning on but couldn't get any runs to cross the plate, only getting two hits and four runners on base in the last five innings of the contest.

Aaron Mack went 4-for-5 with three singles and one double and Beaudreau went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBIs on the day for the Jets.

Newman will be in action this weekend at Oklahoma Panhandle State for a three-game Heartland Conference series starting Friday at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader and Saturday at noon for the final game of the series.
