WICHITA, Kan. — Getting only two days off as they continue their spring break stretch, the Newman men's and women's tennis teams make a quick swing through Oklahoma this weekend, facing off against East Central and Oklahoma Baptist Friday and Saturday, with 2:30 p.m. starts both days.
The Jet women (9-2) are winners of five straight matches and look to keep that stretch going with wins against two tough teams. Tigers (5-6) have won three of their last four, including a 5-4 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith last week, and fell to the same Lewis team that Newman beat at the end of February.
The Bison (8-2), newcomers to Division II, have already moved up to No. 10 in the Central Region rankings, and have won five straight to match the Jets. OBU lost to 6-3 to Drury, which also earned a win over Newman.
The No. 35 Jet men (4-6) have won two of their past three and three of their last five to get the momentum back in their favor, including a 9-0 sweep of Dallas Baptist to open Heartland Conference play on Monday. The No. 42 Tigers (6-3) have won four straight, and have wins on the season over Lewis, Cowley County Community College and Colorado-State Pueblo.
The Bison (9-3) enter Saturday's match riding a six-match win streak, but are 0-3 against Division II competition this season. The Newman men play an extra day this weekend, as after returning from Oklahoma, they turn around and face Division I Wichita State Sunday at 1 p.m. in an exhibition contest.
