SHAWNEE, Okla. — Battling a pair of tough teams on a swing through Oklahoma, the No. 35 Newman men's tennis team split a pair of matches this weekend with East Central and Oklahoma Baptist.
The Jets (5-7) began their tough two days by waiting, as Friday's host No. 45 East Central pushed back the start of its first match of the day, thus getting its match with Newman started after 6 p.m. The two sides played late into the blustery night, with Diego Rojo Fernandez snagging the win in the only three-set match of the night, earning a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles to seal a 5-4 win over the Tigers (6-3).
That came after Eduardo Santos and Alejandro Gonzalez picked up straight-set wins at Nos. 1 and 3 singles, and Santos and Gonzalez, and Fernandez and Andre Ebinal started the night with wins at doubles.
Finishing up their second full match within 24 hours, the Jets were topped by Oklahoma Baptist (10-4) Saturday afternoon. Max Pyle and Jose Enrique Coiras teaming up for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles, Santos earning a solid 6-1, 6-2 victory over fellow nationally-ranked player Daniel Aguilera at top singles, and Gonzalez picking up a tough win at No. 2 singles.
The Jets play for a third straight day, heading to neighboring Wichita State for an exhibition against the Division I side Sunday at 2 p.m.
