WICHITA, Kan. — Facing off against a crosstown rival, the Newman women's tennis team picked up a victory nearly as lopsided as possible, turning back Friends University 9-0 Thursday afternoon at East Genesis Health Club.
Adding to the winning ways of the day, the Newman men picked up an 8-1 win in an exhibition match against Friends earlier Thursday morning at West Genesis.
The Jet women (12-3) were dominant in their win over the Falcons (0-2), dropping just one game across the nine individual matches. Ariana Raga and Vanessa Brill, Kate Bugayenko and Kateryna Stoianova, and Tamar Tskhakaia and Emily Wise started things off with a clean sweep of doubles play, with all three groups earing 8-0 wins.
Brill took a shot at top singles, picking up a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Stoianova, Tskhakaia, Raga, Wise and Marit Lemmens all rolled to 6-0, 6-0 wins to close out the day.
The men were involved in a few tighter matches against the Falcons, but Alejandro Gonzalez, Max Pyle, Diego Rojo Fernandez, Jose Enrique Coiras and Ajani King all picked up singles wins, and the Jets swept the doubles matches.
Both Jet squads take a week off before getting back to action April 2, when they host Arkansas-Fort Smith in their second Heartland Conference match of the season.
