WICHITA, Kan. — A slow start opened up into a slugfest as the Newman baseball team smacked 14 hits and plated 13 runs in a nonconference victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State Tuesday evening at McCarthy Field.
The Jets (19-9) put up a seven-spot in the third inning and saw five different players record multiple hits as they topped the Rangers (11-22) 13-5 to record their sixth win in their last seven games.
After seeing NWOSU get on the board first on an RBI single in the top of the third, Newman answered quickly and didn't stop there. Nick Griffin led off the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run to left to tie things up, and that started a splurge of baserunners for the hosts. Tyler Bugner singled up the middle to follow, and Garett Thomas added a walk before Aaron Mack was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Before the first out of the inning was recorded, Bugner scored on a wild pitch, Lucas Norton slapped a double down the left field line and Andrew Russell plated Brian Canfield with a single to make it 5-1. A Paul Rupnik fielder's choice added a run, and Griffin put up his second extra-base hit of the inning with an RBI double to give the Jets an insurmountable 7-1 lead.
Newman put up at least one run in each inning the rest of the way, with Mack scoring on a wild pitch in the fourth. Griffin pushed another run home on a groundout and Bugner lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 10-2 after the fifth, and Russell picked up his second RBI on a sac fly in the sixth. Mack added a fielder's choice RBI in the seventh, and Rupnik's run-scoring double in the eighth closed the scoring.
A three-run top of the eighth helped keep the run rule out of play for the Rangers, but outside of that frame, the Jet pitchers had their way. Chase Wilson earned his first win of the season by going five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out seven and walking none. Ryan Jenkins and Corey Mondello closed out the final 2 2/3 innings allowing just one hit.
Griffin was 3-for-6 with three RBIs on the day, while Bugner and Mack combined for four hits and five runs scored. Norton and Russell each chipped in two hits and two RBIs, while Thomas, Canfield and Rupnik each added a base knock.
The Jets hit the road this weekend, heading to Oklahoma Christian for a three-game Heartland Conference series Friday and Saturday.
