Jets Rally Late In Both Games But Split

WICHITA, Kan. – After narrowly coming back in the bottom of the seventh in Game 1, the Jets put together some late game magic to walk off in Game 2 of the four-game series against the Augustana Vikings. NU moved to 11-4 on the season and Augustana moved to 3-2.

Game 1 Lucas Schauer earned the nod on the mound for the Jets. He had a 1,2,3 top of the first but it was the same story for the Jet batters in the bottom of the first. In the top of the second Schauer gave up two runs to make it a 2-0 lead for the Vikings.

The NU bats struggled against Hamilton of Augustana. Newman didn't get their first hit until the bottom of the sixth when Lucas Norton singled through the left side but nothing came from it.

The score remained the same until the top of the seventh. James of Augustana was hit by a pitch but then advanced all the way to third on a failed pickoff attempt, which proved costly. The next at bat was a single to center that drove in the last run for the Vikings and they took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Newman made things very interesting in the bottom of the seventh. The Jets faced four different pitchers in the last half inning. Thomas singled through the right side. Canfield hit one back to the pitcher but an errant throw from the pitcher to the second baseman eliminated the potential double play.

With two outs with Thomas at second and Canfield at first, Augustana walked the next three NU batters to make the score 3-2 Augustana with two outs and bases loaded. The final out of Game 1 came when Norton hit into a fielder's choice and the third baseman took it to his own bag. NU lost Game 1 3-2 but they never gave up.

Game 2 Dylan Porter was the starting pitcher for NU. He went 7.1 innings while giving up seven hits, three runs and six strikeouts. The first four innings of the Game 2 went quickly with no runs from either team and only three hits apiece from each team.

Augustana struck first in Game 2 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth that made the score 1-0. NU answered back in the bottom of the sixth when Jordan Doan launched a double to deep left center that scored Brian Canfield all the way from first base.

The Vikings reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh when Lucas Wilber hit a solo home run to left field. Augustana then scored another run on a Newman error in the top of the eighth to take a 3-1 lead. Newman didn't back down and came back out in the bottom of the eighth to tie it up 3-3 going into the ninth inning. Mitchell Beaudreau singled up the middle that drove in Doan to make it 3-2. Daniel Janke came in to pinch hit the next at-bat and singled to center to drive in the tying run.

Joe Cannady replaced Porter in the eighth and was sent back out for the ninth inning. The first batter of the ninth doubled to left center. Cannady then struck out the next two batters and got out of the jam when the final batter grounded out to the shortstop.
Tyler Bugner started the NU bottom of the ninth with a single to center field. Aaron Mack hit into a fielder's choice the next at bat that got Bugner out at second. The next at bat was the final because Garrett Thomas with the late game heroics sent a two run shot over the right center field fence to finish Game 2 in walk off fashion.

Cannady earned the win in Game 2 moving him to 1-0 on the season. Thomas went 3-of-8 for the day with one run and two RBIs. Bugner went 3-of-7 for the day with three hits and one walk. Beaudreau, Doan, Griffin, Hamerle, and Jahnke all finished the day with one RBI.

Newman finishes the four-game nonconference series against Augustana with another doubleheader Sunday at 12 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
