LIBERTY, Mo. – The Newman baseball team returned the favor with a trip to William Jewell, but the Jets came up short in today's nonconference game, losing 13-12 and splitting the season series against the Cardinals.
The Jets (22-14) and Cardinals (22-12) could not get anything going in the first inning but NU would jump out first into the run column, scoring two runs in the top of the second. Daniel Jahnke drove in the first run of the contest with an RBI single up the middle and the next at-bat Andrew Russell would drive in the second run off of an RBI groundout, to make it 2-0 going into the bottom of the second inning.
William Jewell would hold off Newman in the top of the third and that would spark their offense into scoring nine runs in the bottom of the third and taking a 9-2 lead into the fourth inning.
The Jets would answer back in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs and cutting the deficit to 9-6. Russell drove in his second RBI of the game, with an RBI single to right field to make it 9-3. The next three runs of the inning came from a Jacob Hamerle single, a Garett Thomas walk and an Aaron Mack sacrifice fly.
Newman would get another big inning in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs this time and retaking the lead 11-9. A Jahnke single would get Brian Canfield home, after he started the inning off with a double. Hamerle drove in Jahnke with another RBI single and Thomas would get a run across from his RBI groundout. Mack would drive in the last two NU runs of the fifth inning with a triple.
The bats would stay quiet for the Jets in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, only getting two hits in those three-innings. The Cardinals would steal back the lead in the seventh inning, scoring three runs and then getting one run in the eighth, to take a 13-11 lead into the top of the ninth.
Newman would score one run in the top of the ninth, off of a Lucas Norton RBI groundout but the Jets would fall one run short of tying the game and lose 13-12 to William Jewell.
Jahnke and Russell finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored and one walk, while Hamerle went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Jets will be back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. at McCarthy Field, to start their three-game Heartland Conference series against Arkansas-Forth Smith. There will be live stats and video available at newmanjets.com.
