WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman baseball team faced off against Arkansas-Fort Smith in today's finale of the three-game Heartland Conference series and fell short 16-11 in the high scoring contest.
The Jets (23-16, 9-9 Heartland) came out sluggish to start the game and gave up three early runs to the Lions (20-16, 9-9) in the top of the first inning. NU couldn't take advantage of two walks and a wild pitch, that ended up putting two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the first.
All was quiet in the second inning for both teams but UAFS got a big inning in the top of the third, by scoring 10 runs, making that the deciding factor in the game.
Newman couldn't get its bats going until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Aaron Mack doubled to center field to drive in the first run of the game for NU.
The Jets got four runs in the bottom of the sixth, first when Lucas Norton drove in two NU runners off of a single through the left side. The last two runs of the inning came from a throwing error from the first baseman to home, when he bounced the ball in the dirt and then the ball ricocheted off the backstop, to get Jacob Hamerle and Norton across the plate.
Kevin Luman came into the game in the top of the fifth inning in a relief role and held UAFS scoreless in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Newman would get three runs in the bottom of the seventh, first when Andrew Russell hit a double to right center to get in Nick Griffin and then Tyler Bugner would drive in the last two runs with a single up the middle, to make the score 13-8 UAFS, after seven complete innings.
The Lions would extend their lead though in the top of the eighth, scoring their last three runs to make the score 16-8.
Newman was held scoreless in the eighth but would score its last three runs in the bottom of the ninth on a walk, hit by pitch and sacrifice fly, to make the final score 16-11 in favor of UAFS.
Bugner finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBIs and one run scored, while Russell went 2-for-5 with three runs scored, two doubles and one RBI.
The Jets will be back in action next weekend at Texas A&M International for another three-game Heartland Conference series.
