Jets Close Strong To Best Arkansas-Fort Smith

WICHITA, Kan. — Taking on its second Heartland Conference opponent of the season, the Newman men's tennis team remained undefeated in league play with a 6-3 victory over Arkansas-Fort Smith Saturday at Riverside Park.

The Jets (6-8, 2-0 Heartland) were locked in a tight one against the Lions (2-8, 1-1 Heartland), tied 3-3 after the hosts won two of the three doubles matches and UAFS countered by taking two of the top three in singles. Newman finished strong though, as Max Pyle won a three-set match at No. 5, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, and Diego Rojo Fernandez and Jose Enrique Coiras earned wins at Nos. 4 and 6 to close out the win.

Alejandro Gonzalez grabbed the team's fourth point in singles, winning at No. 2, while he and Eduardo Santos earned an 8-4 win at top doubles and Andre Ebinal and Fernandez teamed up for a win at No. 3 doubles to start the morning.

The Jets are back in action next weekend, with a tough swing through Texas against St. Mary's and St. Edward's.
