Jets Roll In Nonconference Game Over Cardinals

WICHITA, Kan. – A fast paced start offensively and defensively helped Newman secure a 12-6 win over William Jewell on a bright sunny and windy day at McCarthy Field.

The Jets (22-10) saw Chase Wilson earn the starting job on the mound and he got out to a good start in the top of the first retiring the side 1-2-3 for the Cardinals (19-9). Newman locked in early on the starting pitcher for William Jewell by getting five of the first six Jet batters on base.

The first runs of the day were driven in by Garrett Thomas off of a single up in the middle, getting Lucas Norton and Tyler Bugner in to take a quick 2-0 lead. Aaron Mack would get a double the next at-bat to get Thomas to third base and Nick Griffin would bring him in on an RBI groundout to the shortstop. The final run of the first inning was driven in off of a Brian Canfield single, bringing Mack home to make the score 4-0 after one complete inning.

Newman scored another run off a double from Thomas, getting Jacob Hamerle home to make the score 5-0 after two complete innings. William Jewell would answer in the third and fourth innings, scoring one run each in both of the innings.

The Jets would take complete control of the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs. All of the scoring would take place when the Jets had two outs. An error by the Cardinals would drive in the first run of the inning for Newman. The Jets would score their next five runs on a walk, wild pitch, walk, a single and finally another walk. After four complete innings Newman led 11-2.

Over the final five innings, the Jets would only get one more run and that came from a Daniel Jahnke single in the bottom of the fifth. The Cardinals would get two runs in the fifth, one in the eighth and their last one in the ninth.

On the day Newman racked in 14 hits, while William Jewell got 13 hits. Norton would finish the game going 4-for-6 with one RBI and two runs scored. Thomas finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs and one run scored. Wilson earned the win, making him 2-1 on the season.

The Jets will be back in action this weekend for a three-game Heartland Conference series against the St. Mary's Rattlers. There will be live stats and video at newmanjets.com.
