DALLAS — Eduardo Santos picked up a win over a regionally-ranked opponent, but the Newman men's tennis team fell 7-2 to No. 27 St. Mary's in a match that was much closer than its final score Friday afternoon.
The Jets (6-9, 2-1 Heartland) dropped three close matches, including two that went to a third set, to fall to the Rattlers (10-9, 2-0 Heartland) in a matchup of conference unbeaten.
Santos rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Adam Dockery, who came in ranked 12th in the South Central Region, and Diego Rojo Fernandez and Andre Ebinal teamed up to grab a tight 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles for the Jets' second point.
Ebinal returned the favor with a blowout second set, but ultimately fell in a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 match at No. 3 singles, and Max Pyle forced a third set with a big win in the second but fell in an extended tiebreaker at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (14-12).
The Jets are back in action Saturday, completing a tough two-day stretch with a matchup against St. Edward's at 10 a.m. in Arlington, Texas.
