WICHITA, Kan. — Getting a stellar effort from starter Dylan Porter and just enough offense, the Newman baseball team turned back Rogers State Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Field to take the Heartland Conference series and end its home schedule with a win.
The Jets (28-17, 14-10 Heartland) used three hits to score a run in the bottom of the first, and didn't look back from there, keeping the Hillcats (25-22, 10-14 Heartland) at bay throughout the rest of the game to hold onto its spot in fourth place in the league standings.
After keeping RSU off the scoreboard in the first inning for the first time in the series, the Jets kept the momentum going in their direction with a run in the bottom half of the frame. Tyler Bugner laced a single back up the middle, and Aaron Mack followed by blasting a double high off the wall in right center to score Bugner and make it 1-0.
Newman went quietly in the second, but bounced back to tack on another run in the third, with Bugner again getting things started with a one-out walk. The junior swiped second base, and scored when Garett Thomas sliced a single into left to make it a 2-0 game.
The two runs of support was one more than Porter needed in the early going. Making his final start at home, the senior retired the first nine batters he faced, and allowed just four hits and two walks over his final four frames. He finished the day going seven innings and striking out seven to grab his fifth win of the season.
The Jets would need that kind of pitching, as RSU's starter Tyler Kruse limited the damage the rest of the way, going seven innings himself only allowing six hits. Corey Mondello came out of the bullpen to record the two-inning save for Newman, setting down six straight Hillcats and striking out two for his second save of the season.
Thomas led the way offensively for the Jets, going 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a double. Bugner, Mack, Nick Griffin, Andrew Russell and Jacob Hamerle each adding single hits.
The Jets close their regular season on the road, taking on first-place St. Edward's in a crucial Heartland Conference series next weekend.
