AUSTIN, Texas – The Newman baseball team played its final Heartland Conference game of the season this afternoon against St. Edward's and ended up dropping a 7-6 heartbreaker in extra innings to SEU.
The Jets (28-20, 14-13 Heartland) couldn't get the bats going in the top of the first and neither could the Hilltoppers (40-10, 23-4 Heartland) in the bottom of the first, due to a quick 1-2-3 half inning from starting pitcher Dylan Porter and the NU fielders.
St.Edward's would put up the first four runs of the game though, scoring one run in the second, two runs in the third and one more run in the fifth, to make it 4-0 SEU after five complete innings.
The Jet bats would come alive in the top of the sixth, getting six runs home to steal the lead from the Hilltoppers. Tyler Bugner drove in the first NU run of the game off a double to right center, to get in Lucas Norton from first base. Nick Griffin would drive home two more Jet runners, off a single to right center.
The very next at-bat Brian Canfield would hit a double to the left side power-alley, that would score Griffin and Garett Thomas to put Newman on top 5-4. Andrew Russell would then get the last NU run home in the top of the sixth with a single up the middle, scoring Canfield from second base to make it 6-4.
Neither team could manage to get any runs across the plate in the seventh or eighth innings. Newman stranded a runner in scoring position in the top of the ninth and had St. Edward's down to its last out in the bottom of the ninth but gave up a two run home run that tied the game at 6-6, which lead to extra innings.
The Jets couldn't get a runner in scoring position in the 10th inning but managed to escape out of a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the 10th inning, to force another extra inning.
Newman would have another chance in the top of the 11th inning to get a runner home but left him stranded in scoring position and an eventual walk-off home run from St. Edward's in the bottom of the 11th inning would bring the Jets 2016 season to a close.
Canfield went 2-for-5 with one run scored, one double and two RBIs for the day.
The Jets finished the season at 28-20 and 14-13 in the Heartland Conference, which puts them in fifth place in the conference standings.
