Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Fiszel's Overtime Goal Sends Newman Home Winners

WICHITA, Kan. — Approaching just minutes to play and facing the prospects of finishing in a draw, the Newman men's soccer team snapped a long dry spell in the game as Tommy Fiszel slid home the game-winner in overtime to top Colorado-Colorado Springs Saturday night at Wilkins Field.

KEY SEQUENCE

There was no moment bigger than when Fiszel won a ball from teammate Luca Anelli and raced into the left side of the box with it as the final seconds clicked off the clock in the first session of overtime between the Jets (2-2-0 overall and the Mountain Lions (1-1-1). The sophomore went heads-up with a defender and edged past him, leaving him one-on-one with the keeper, who he beat with a low, cross-goal shot that snuck inside the right post to win it.

SCORING PLAYS

29'-UCCS-Blake Barnes, assist Conor Langenbahn. Short pass from left side, chipped ball past keeper from sharp angle from the left.

40'-Newman-Carlos Rubio Garcia, assist Luca Anelli. Shot by Anelli saved, rebound to Rubio Garcia, who knocked it by defenseless keeper.

100'-Newman-Tommy Fiszel, unassisted. Got ball in front of defender, got by defender and slid ball inside far post from left side.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Things started out slowly as each team began racking up fouls rather than shots. Newman's Marian Saar uncorked the first shot of the game in the eighth minute, although it sailed high and over the net.

-The next shot, and UCCS' first, didn't come for another 10 minutes and went wide, and three minutes after Saar unleashed another rocket that went high in the 26th, the Mountain Lions got on the board.

-Newman continued to push the ball offensively, and forced the first action out of the UCCS keeper with Ed Jabbari's laser from the top of the box in the 36th minute, and the Jets would draw even on their most dangerous attempt of the first half, as Anelli rocketed one off the keeper and Rubio Garcia was there for the cleanup.

-The Lions got Newman keeper Blake Andrews moving early in the second half, as he had to save a shot from the right wing in the 53rd. Another shot seven minutes later got past him, but Gbonju Odukale was there on the line to prevent the guests from going ahead once more.

-The final 10 minutes of regulation was frenzied, as both teams looked to avoid heading to extra time. Jabbari put up a shot from close range that forced a save out of UCCS, and Rubio Garcia put one over the crossbar in the 78th minute.

-With things slowing down as overtime got started, the Jets began to pick up the pace. When Fernando Rubio Garcia's shot from 20 yards out whistled just over the crossbar in the 97th minute, it seemed like a tie may have been minutes away, but Fiszel's score three minutes later prevented that.

NOTES

-Newman played just under 190 minutes of soccer in a span of just over 30 hours this weekend and came out with two wins. It was the first time since the 2008 season that the Jets had to play on back-to-back days.

-The Mountain Lions were receiving votes in the latest coaches' poll after playing to a draw against No. 7 Midwestern State and beating Lubbock Christian, both teams that the Jets will face in Heartland Conference play.

-The win came in the final game of nonconference play for the Jets, who will play 14 consecutive Heartland matches to close out the regular season.

WHAT'S NEXT

Newman goes on the road to start league play, heading to Texas-Permian Basin Thursday and Lubbock Christian next Saturday.
