WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman volleyball played its final home nonconference match against Bacone College tonight, coming away with a sweeping 3-0 victory in front of the home crowd.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (11-4 overall) won all three sets by an average of nine points in tonight's matchup against the Warriors (1-9 overall). But Bacone gave Newman a tough test in the Set 2, because the Warriors led the Jets 16-14 a little over halfway through the set. Newman fought back to reclaim the lead at 17-16 and pushed ahead of Bacone to claim the set victory 25-20.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
-The Jets trailed only once in Set 1 and it was early on in the set when they trailed 3-1.
-Newman would jump out to a 4-3 lead and not look back the rest of the way, getting out to a ten-point lead three times at 21-11, 22-12 and 23-13 before taking the set 25-16.
-
Yemima Buana led the Jets in kills with six for Set 1.
Set 2
-Newman and Bacone both fought hard throughout Set 2, which was the most competitive set of the night with five tie scores and three lead changes.
-The Jets trailed a little over halfway through the set at 16-14 but with two kills from
Hailey Braddy and three kills from
Sarah Peterson along with six untimely errors from Bacone helped Newman hang onto the 25-20 set victory.
-Braddy, Buana and Peterson were all tied with three kills for Set 2.
Set 3
-The Jets wouldn't allow the Warriors to hang around very long in Set 3, only trailing once in the set at 1-0, Newman would come out with some fire to push the score ahead at 13-4 halfway through the set and not look back the rest of the way.
-Newman would win Set 3, 25-13 by having an impressive team hitting percentage at .448 to help push past the Warrior defense.
