Jets Run Unbeaten Streak To Five With Win Over OC

WICHITA, Kan. — Keeping its recent unbeaten streak alive with an unrelenting offensive attack, the Newman men's soccer team got a late second-half goal to pick up a 2-1 victory over Oklahoma Christian in Heartland Conference action Thursday night at Wilkins Field.

KEY SEQUENCE

The Jets (4-2-1, 2-0-1, 7 pts Heartland) were pushing the pace for much of the second half, but still looking at a 1-1 tie with the Eagles (2-5-0, 0-3-0, 0 pts Heartland) as the clock ticked away. That all changed when Ed Jabbari, who also assisted on Newman's first goal of the night, beat a defender to a ball at the top of the box and ripped a shot past the OC keeper to put the Jets ahead for good in the 71st minute.

SCORING PLAYS

1'-Newman-Tommy Fiszel, assist Ed Jabbari. Jabbari received a long cross on the right side of the box, chipped a pass inside to Fiszel, who caught the keeper off-guard and slid it low for the quick score.

53'-Oklahoma Christian-Cody Cook, unassisted. Cook lined up for a free kick from 20 yards out on the right side, and got a fortuitous skip off a defender and the keeper's glove to tie it up.

71'-Newman-Ed Jabbari, unassisted. Jabbari's hustle won him a ball as a defender was bearing down. A hard shot under the crossbar in the middle of the net put the Jets up.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Fiszel's early goal gave the aggressive Jets the momentum from the start, and they would hold onto it for long stretches. Jabbari also uncorked two nice shots of his own early, sending one wide and forcing OC keeper Evan Helker to stop the other.

-Calum Dillon got his first work early for the Jets, stopping a shot in the ninth minute. The Eagles' limited chances were often on goal, including all three in the opening 45 minutes.

-Chibueze Nwagwu got loose for a shot from the left side in the 31st, forcing another save from Helker. That came before the Eagles got their best chance of the first half, as a shot from the right side was just deflect by Dillon, and the guests picked up two corners on ensuing action, but couldn't get another shot off.

-Nwagwu pushed a shot just wide six minutes into the second half, and the Eagles took possession, leading to their only score of the night. A Newman foul set Cook up with a free kick from just outside the box, and a pair of deflections helped the ball carom in to tie it.

-The two sides started playing a bit looser in the middle of the period, combining for nine shots in just seven minutes, only one requiring a save, as Dillon snagged a header off an OC corner in the 68th.

-The hustle of Jabbari put the Jets back up three minutes later, and the Eagles were held without a shot the rest of the way despite trying to force the action. Newman got off three shots in those final 19 minutes, and was able to maintain enough possession to salt the game away.

NOTES

-Newman's unbeaten streak now stretches five matches, over which the Jets have gone 4-0-1. That's the team's best mark over five games since they won five in a row to end the 2014 regular season, a run that stretched to six wins in a row.

-The game-winner was Jabbari's first goal of the season, and he's now been a part of three of the Jets' last five goals, assisting on both the first goal against OC and the first in a 3-0 win over Texas-Permian Basin last week.

-The Jets outshot the Eagles 16-8, including 7-5 in shots on goal. It's the fifth straight game Newman has outshot its opponent.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Jets stay home Saturday afternoon for a tough matchup against No. 23 Midwestern State at 2:30 p.m. back at Wilkins Field.
