Jets Drop Nonconference Match To Regis

DENVER — Facing a team that possessed the ball and maintained a consistent attack, the Newman men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Regis to close its opening weekend of play Sunday afternoon.

KEY SEQUENCE

Still just one solid charge away from tying the game while down 1-0, the Jets (0-2 overall) saw their chances get a lot tougher when the Rangers (1-0 overall) won a ball deep in their own offensive zone and put up a shot and score that made it 2-0 in the 76th minute.

SCORING PLAYS

43'-Regis-Ryan Urwiller, assist Noah Chapleski. A restart after a Newman foul found the head of Urwiller, who nodded it home for the lead.

76'-Regis-Eduardo Belmar, assist Urwiller. Urillwer won a ball back from the Jets, knocked it ahead to Belmer, who put a shot high across the goal to double the lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Newman had the first attempt of the game, as Marian Saar put up the game's first shot in the third minute, which needed saved by the Regis keeper.

-The Rangers would jump on the offensive from there though, putting up six shots, including two that were saved by Newman's Blake Andrews, over the next 12 minutes.

-For the next 25 minutes, the two teams alternated dangerous sequences, going up and down the field with shots on both ends by both teams until Regis broke the scoreless tie with its header in the 43rd.

-Newman once again started a half quickly, with Ed Jabbari uncorking a shot that was saved in the 47th, and once again, Regis responded with some sustained offense, getting off seven shots over the next 15 minutes.

-The Rangers' second goal gave them some breathing room and allowed the hosts to focus on keeping the Jets attack at bay.

NOTES

-Andrews faced 21 shots in net in his Newman debut, including 10 on-goal, making eight saves.

-The Jets managed seven shots, including two apiece from Luca Anelli, Saar and Jabbari.
