ADA, Okla. — Continuing its stellar defense, but still searching for a scoring touch, the Newman women's soccer team went on the road for the first time this season Tuesday afternoon, coming away with a 0-0 draw at East Central.
KEY SEQUENCE
During a game that saw limited offensive opportunities for both teams, the Jets (1-0-2 overall) saw a few too many for comfort in the final minute of the game. The host Tigers (0-2-1 overall) ripped off three shots in the final 60 seconds of the second overtime, with Newman keeper Ashley Sweetnam saving a rebound shot on ECU's most dangerous attempt.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Both teams came out of the chute looking to find the upperhand, with the Tigers getting off the first shot of the game and forcing the first save out of Kelsi Langley for the Jets in the fourth minute.
-Newman picked up two corners in a 30-second stretch just over 10 minutes later, but weren't able to get a shot off with the offensive advantage. Morgan Foster and Caitlin Davis forced the ECU keeper off her mark with shots in the 17th and 21st minutes, respectively.
-The hosts managed just two shots, both on goal, over the final 30 minutes of the first half against what has proven to be a stingy Jets defense.
-Newman uncorked nine shots in the second half, including five in the first 12 minutes after intermission.
-A shot by ECU in the final minute of regulation forced Sweetnam to make a play on the ball, making the save to preserve the tie and send things to extra time.
-Sweetnam needed to halt another shot in the first minute of the first overtime to keep the Jets playing, although the guests got off just one shot to ECU's three in the first 10-minute session.
-The Jets put up the first two shots of the second overtime period, pushing one wide and having the other saved, before they survived the flurry of action at the end.
NOTES
-Newman has yet to concede a goal to the opposition in three games — and 310 minutes of play — this season. It is the longest scoreless streak to start a season in the Jets' Division II era, and the three clean sheets are one short of what Newman recorded all of last season.
