WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman men's basketball team hosted Dallas Baptist in another Heartland Conference matchup Thursday evening at Fugate Gymnasium, falling 102-81.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (6-9, 4-2 Heartland) battled back after trailing 17-0 early on to make the score 24-16 with 9:54 to play in the first half but the Patriots (9-6, 4-2 Heartland) would go on a 27-4 run to push way out in front and keep Newman out of reach throughout the rest of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Dallas Baptist would get out to an early 17-0 lead but Newman would answer with a quick 11-0 run of its own.
Jacob Birnbaum would get a layup to roll in for the first Jet points followed by an
Allen Wilson 3-pointer. Birnbaum would hit two free throws, followed by baskets from
Taylor Schieber and
Grant Meininger to make the score 17-11 with 12:06 in the first half.
-The Patriots would control the middle portion of the first half but Newman would close out the half on a 14-5 run to put the score at 56-34 heading into halftime. Daniel Nwosu would score nine points during the 14-5 run, while Wilson added three and Birnbaum chipped in two to complete the run.
-Newman would go on a quick 6-0 to put the score at 78-55 with 10:11 to play in the second half. Nwosu had five points while Bryant added one to complete the 6-0 run.
-The Jets would have an 8-3 run to make the score 88-63 with 6:43 left in regulation. Schieber scored six points during the run, while
Daniel Green added two free throws.
-An 8-2 run with 5:15 on the clock made the score 92-71,
Pierre Hayden and Bryant had three points a piece and Schieber added two.
-The Jets finished the game on a 7-0 run with
Matthew Green scoring four points, while Anthony Harvey hit two free throws and
Kyle Mazza knocked down one free throw to put the final score at 102-81.

NOTES
-Nwosu has scored over 20 points in four straight conference games. He led the Jets again with 21 points, while adding seven boards and three steals to his stat line. By hitting his first five free throws Thursday, Nwosu ran his streak to 34 consecutive makes from the foul line.
-It's the seventh straight game that Newman has scored at least 80 points in a contest. It's the eighth time this season that the Jets have accomplished this feat.
