LAREDO, Texas — After going 12 days without a game, it didn't take the Newman women's basketball team that long to find its rhythm once again, leading for all but six minutes on its way to a 67-48 road victory over Texas A&M International in Heartland Conference action Thursday evening.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (13-5, 3-3 Heartland) took the lead early against the Dustdevils (1-16, 1-6 Heartland), but it was a big 15-0 run that covered nearly four minutes over the end of the third quarter and into the fourth. Cierra Tjaden started it with a layup, Mali Wright continued with back-to-back buckets, then added a three-point play in between two 3-pointers from Natalia Hausmann to make it a 58-37 contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Bria DeGrate netted the first points for the Jets, hitting a 3-pointer to tie it up early, and Wright followed with a jumper to give the guests their first lead of the game at 5-3 four minutes in.
-The two sides traded triples over the next two minutes as the lead bounced back and forth. Hannah Alexander hit the second of those shots for Newman, and that started an 8-0 burst out of the Jets that vaulted them into the lead for good at 16-9.
-The Dustdevils pulled it close on multiple occasions in the first half, including a 5-0 spurt to end the first quarter that made it 16-14. A 3-pointer early in the second quarter made it a one-point game, but Hausmann followed with a bucket on the next possession and Alexander buried another trey to make it 23-17.
-After building an eight-point advantage by halftime, the Jets pushed the lead into double digits early in the second half. Alexander and Tjaden tossed in field goals, and DeGrate added a 3-pointer to cap a seven-point run and make it 40-28 with 5:43 left in the third.
-TAMIU did manage to cut it to 43-37 with 1:26 left in the third before Newman went on its game-changing run. The hosts couldn't get it any closer than 15 from there as the Jets ran to the win.
