CLAREMORE, Okla. – After falling in the previous conference game on Saturday, the Newman men's basketball team bounced back against Rogers State Monday afternoon, winning 102-95 at the Claremore Expo Center.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (5-8, 3-1 Heartland) would hold a slight 44-42 lead at halftime over the Hillcats (9-5, 2-2 Heartland) but a 15-4 run to open up the second half of play would have Rogers State playing catch up throughout the second half, along with quality free throw shooting down the stretch helped Newman hang on to win the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-A
Daniel Green layup would be the first basket of the game for either team, but the Hillcats would quickly capture their only lead of the game at 5-2 and hold onto the lead until
Taylor Schieber hit a 3-pointer to put the Jets out in front at 20-18 with 12:21 to go in the first half. Those were the only lead changes of the entire game.
-Newman lead 22-19 with 11:08 remaining in the first half and got out to its biggest lead of the game by going on a quick 12-0 run that lasted roughly three minutes.
Pierre Hayden got the run started by getting a layup, followed by a layup from
Kevin Bryant and Daniel Nwosu knocked down two free throws that made up the first-six points of the 12-0 run. Bryant would capitalize on two layups and Nwosu Jr. would hit a jumper to finish the run for the Jets.
-Rogers State would battle back in the later part of the first half to get within two points of the Newman lead at halftime to make the score 44-42. The Jets would get things started early in the second half by going on a 13-4 run in the first-four minutes.
-The 15-4 run was started by a Bryant 3-pointer, followed by two made free throws from Schieber and then four straight points from Bryant would make up the first-nine points of the 15-4 run for the Jets. The run was completed by a Schieber 3-pointer and a
Christian DeYoung 3-pointer to put the score at 59-46 with 15:59 to play in the game.
-The Hillcats would get within five points of the Newman lead at 66-61 with 9:10 remaining in the contest. A finish underneath from Green, along with another timely 3-pointer from Schieber would push the Jet lead back out to ten points with 8:15 on the clock.
-Schieber would be fouled on a 3-point attempt and would knock down all three free throws to get Newman back out to another ten-point lead with 6:29 left in the game. Back-to-back Jet possessions ended with dunks with one coming from Green and the other from
Jacob Birnbaum with 5:01 to play and the score at 82-71.
-The Jets went 16-of-20 from the foul line from 3:54 mark in the second half until the end of the game. Nwosu went a perfect 12-of-12 during that stretch, which helped seal the 102-95 victory for Newman.
