OKLAHOMA CITY — Putting up a powerful comeback attempt, the Newman men's basketball team fell just short of completing it Thursday night, dropping a 76-74 decision against Oklahoma Christian in Heartland Conference action.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (6-12, 4-5 Heartland) would not go away quietly against the Eagles (7-11, 2-8), as they burst out on a 10-0 run in the final 90 seconds to suddenly make it a game. Taylor Schieber netted eight of those points, including back-to-back 3-pointers, the latter of which made it a one-point game with 1:03 on the clock. Newman had the ball down two on the final possession, but OC's defense forced a tough shot, and the hosts held on.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-A Kevin Bryant layup would be the first score for either team in the game at the 19:48 mark in the first half but the Eagles would jump out to an early 12-4 lead with 13:57 left in the first half.
-A Christian DeYoung 3-pointer followed by a Grant Meininger layup would make the score 12-9 in favor of Oklahoma Christian with 12:29 on the clock in the first half.
-The Jets would get within two points of the Eagle lead at 27-25 due to a quick 7-0 late in the first half. Schieber would start the run with a jumper, followed by a Jacob Birnbaum layup and the run was finally capped off by an Allen Wilson 3-pointer. OC would take a 36-32 lead into intermission.
-Newman would get within two points again of the Oklahoma Christian lead early in the second half when Bryant connected on a 3-pointer to make the score 40-38 with 17:54 to play.
-Oklahoma Christian would go on a 15-3 run midway through the second half to get out to a 61-45 lead with 9:20 remaining in the contest. Newman would go on a 12-3 run to make the score 70-60 with 3:31 on the clock. Daniel Green had four points during the run, while Schieber and DeYoung added three and Daniel Nwosu Jr. with two to complete the run.
-Nwosu twice answered layups by the Eagles to cut the lead back to 10 inside of three minutes to play, leading up to the Jets' big run down the finish.

NOTES
-Down 67-48 with 6:54 to play, the Jets turned up the heat on the Eagles, finishing the game on a 26-9 run. Newman shot 9-of-16, including 4-of-9 from deep, during that stretch, and forced eight turnovers out of the hosts.
-Newman forced 15 turnovers in all on the night, netting 23 points off them.
-DeYoung netted double-digit points for the second straight game, going 3-of-7 from beyond the arc to finish with 11.
