Late-Match Excitement Leads Newman Past Pratt

WICHITA, Kan. — Grabbing six wins and rolling up 12 bonus points, the Newman wrestling team closed strong in a 30-18 victory over Pratt Community College Wednesday evening at Fugate Gymnasium.

Trailing by nine with four bouts left, the Jets (1-3) picked up the pace, as Kyle Ryan and Noah Ornelas recorded back-to-back falls that essentially sealed the victory with Dalton Weidl set to receive a forfeit at 197.

Thor Balavage closed it out by gutting his way to a 9-4 decision to increase the final margin, while Dustin Reed and Tyler Mies kept up their torrid pace, recording a tech fall and a pin, respectively.

The Jets take the weekend off before resuming MIAA dual action with their final appearance at home this season, hosting undefeated Central Oklahoma Wednesday.

RESULTS

125: Dustin Reed (NU) tf. Kelvys Gonzalez 5:27 (15-0).

Reed jumped out quickly, grabbing a takedown and recording a pair of two-point nearfalls to go up 6-0 after one period. He didn't allow a single point, escaping quickly in the second and putting up another six points, and closing out the tech with a takedown in the third.

133: Demone McClinton (PCC) dec. Cole Sutterfield 16-10.

Sutterfield came out on fire, dumping McClinton to his back for a six-point move in the first, but McClinton slowly chipped away at the lead, closing the match with a six-point move of his own that sealed the victory.

141: Dy'Juan Carney (PCC) won by forfeit.

149: Tyler Mies (NU) md. Corey Tyler 10-2.

Mies got the opening takedown and begin to build riding time, but wasn't able to turn Tyler for back points. A scoreless second period turned into a high-scoring third for Mies though, who rolled up three takedowns to lock up the major.

157: Jayson Failer (PCC) dec. Forlanda Parker 4-3.

Parker got in on Failer for the first takedown of the bout, but the Pratt wrestler countered with an escape and takedown in the second that gave him the lead. Parker got within one after a quick escape in the third, but couldn't find another quality shot to get a match-winner.

165: Laaiq Hedrick (PCC) fall Colton Duhr 4:31.

Duhr and Hedrick went back-and-forth throughout the first four minutes, as Duhr got the first takedown, and went up 3-2 in the third after an escape following a restart after Hedrick's injury time. A throw from Hedrick took Duhr to his back, and Hedrick picked up the fall.

174: Kyle Ryan (NU) fall Jose Cortez 3:43.

Ryan scored at will in the first, ringing up three takedowns in catch-and-release style. Cortez added an escape to start the second, but Ryan muscled through a throw and stuck Cortez near the edge of the circle to start the Jet comeback.

184: Noah Ornelas (NU) fall James Ellis 5:16.

Ornelas didn't get out to the best of starts, surrendering two takedowns in the opening period and even giving up a point for stalling, but the third period was his friend, as the freshman got in on a slick single-leg and took Ellis to his back and lock up the win.

197: Dalton Weidl (NU) won by forfeit.

285: Thor Balavage (NU) dec. Bradon Huntley 9-4.

Balavage gave up the first takedown, but quickly escaped and countered with one of his own, followed by two back points that gave the freshman a solid lead. Another takedown in the third, combined with riding time closed out the comfortable win.
