WICHITA, Kan. – After earning its first conference victory early this week, the Newman women's basketball team came back home to take on Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday afternoon at Fugate Gymnasium, cruising to a 97-59 win.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (12-5, 2-3 Heartland) came out with a purpose today, controlling the game from the beginning over the Aggies (1-12, 0-5 Heartland) but the biggest sequence of the contest would come before and after halftime. Going on a 14-1 run to end the second quarter and coming out in the third quarter with a 10-0 run would put the game out of reach for OPSU early in second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-A
Hannah Alexander 3-pointer would be the first points of the game for Newman to make the score 3-2 early on. A jumper from an Aggie player would give them the lead for the last time in the game at 4-3.
-The Jets would find their rhythm on offense by going on an 8-0 run to close out the first quarter and lead OPSU 26-14. During the 8-0 run Alexander led the way with four points, while
Mali Wright connected on a jumper and
Sheanna James finished a layup at the buzzer.
-OPSU would cut into the Jet lead with a 5-0 run to make it a nine-point game with 4:25 to play in the second quarter. Newman would answer back with a 14-1 run to end the second quarter and head into halftime with 46-24 lead.
-During the 14-1 run the Jets would get four fast break layups with two coming from
Melanie George and one each from
Cierra Tjaden and
Jazzmen Ortiz, all four fast break layups were assisted from
Iva Krstevska. Ortiz completed the run by knocking down a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
-The Jets started the third quarter where they left off in the second by coming out with a 10-0 run.
Bria DeGrate connected on back-to-back 3-pointers, while Alexander and Ortiz made layups to make the score 56-24 with 7:43 to play in the third quarter.
-Newman would control the third quarter and take a 72-36 into the final quarter of play. A quick 5-0 run from the Jets to start the fourth quarter would push the lead out to 77-36 with 8:03 to play in regulation.
Natalia Hausmann led the way with three points and Alexander added two during the run.
-The Jets would hold out the rest of the fourth quarter and win 97-59 over the Aggies.

NOTES
-With the win this afternoon, the Jets are officially back on a winning streak by winning back-to-back conference games over Rogers State and Oklahoma Panhandle State.
-In the last two conference games Alexander has reached at least 20 points in scoring. She had 24 points against Rogers State on Monday and 21 today, leading the way for Newman once again.
-The Jets trailed for only 42 seconds of the entire game, which all came in the first minute of the contest.
