Jets Fall To DBU In Tight Matchup

WICHITA, Kan. — Playing close to its opponent throughout the night, the Newman volleyball team fell in a tough 3-0 match to Dallas Baptist Thursday evening in Heartland Conference action at Fugate Gymnasium.

KEY SEQUENCE

Despite being down 2-0 in the match, the Jets (10-17, 3-5 Heartland) were playing well in the third, holding a 16-13 lead midway through against the Patriots (8-13, 4-5 Heartland). The guests responded went up, but Newman charged back, going up late at 23-22. Instead of breaking through to a fourth set though, DBU closed things with a pair of kills and an error to close the 25-19, 25-23, 25-23 victory.d

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Going up 10-9 thanks to a 4-1 run early, the Jets stayed close throughout the opening set. A 4-0 burst from DBU put it up three, and although the Patriots would lead the rest of the way, the Jets pulled to within one on a kill from Emily Harvey to make it 16-15. A 5-1 run from the visitors from that point made the difference, as they would hold on to take the lead.

-A fast start from Newman had it out to a 4-2 lead with kills from Kayla Turner and Hailey Braddy. A 4-0 DBU run flipped that lead, but the Jets didn't collapse, rolling off a 6-0 roll of their own, including two Turner kills and a block from Crystal Powell. It took until a three-point run late for the Patriots to tie it at 16-all, and DBU went up 23-19. Newman didn't go quietly though, getting a kill from Anna Burton, one from Harvey and a block by Powell and Harvey to get it to 24-23 before the Patriots closed it out.

-Turner contributed two aces, a kill and part of a block with Powell to help the Jets to a 5-1 lead to start the third as they looked to mount a comeback. It was a multi-point lead for Newman until DBU tied it at 10-10, but two Harvey kills and a pair of errors pushed the hosts back up 14-11. The two sides traded runs the rest of the way, with Powell going for a kill and a block with Harvey to key a 5-1 run that put the Jets ahead 23-22 before DBU scored the final three points.

NOTES

-Turner went for 11 kills, 12 digs and three aces to lead the Jets.

-Anna Burton added 15 digs, while Yemima Buana tallied nine kills on .286 hitting.
