WICHITA, Kan. — Jumping on the opponent in each set, the Newman volleyball team grabbed a comfortable 3-0 victory over Texas A&M International in Heartland Conference action Saturday afternoon at Fugate Gymnasium.
KEY SEQUENCE
Up after the first set, the Jets (9-12, 3-2 Heartland) were looking to keep rolling in the second, but went down 4-3 early to the Dustdevils (2-17, 0-5 Heartland). An Emily Harvey kill tied things up on the next point, and Newman went on a 5-0 run with kills out of Reagen Roth and Yemima Buana and a Sarah Peterson ace to take control back, and trailed just once the rest of the match as it rolled to the 25-18, 25-15, 25-11 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Kills from Crystal Powell, Hailey Braddy and Harvey boosted Newman to a 4-0 lead in the first. TAMIU tied it at 5-5, but the Jets ran off another four straight to build a lead. The guests used an 8-2 run to earn a lead and go up as much as 14-12. A Powell kill and Roth ace made it 15-14, and after the Dustdevils tied it on the next serve, a three-kill burst from Harvey powered a 5-0 run and allowed the Jets to cruise to the set win.
-After Newman's early spurt to take control, TAMIU never got closer than four in the second. Buana registered a kill to extend the lead past 10-6, and kills from Kayla Turner and Harvey, along with a few Dustdevil errors, quickly made it a 19-8 game. That margin ballooned to 23-11 before TAMIU found some footing, but it was too little, too late as a block from Buana and Braddy closed it out.
-The Dustdevils squeaked out to a 5-4 lead early in the third, but the Jets followed that with an 8-1 run, as Buana turned in two kills and Braddy and Burton each picked up an ace. Up 15-9 midway through, Newman scored 10 of the final 12 points, with Harvey netting three kills down the stretch.
NOTES
-The Jets hit .272 for the match, including .458 with just two errors in the third set. That attack percentage for the match was the highest for Newman since hitting .301 against Lubbock Christian, also a three-set sweep.
-Newman posted eight aces, its most in a three-set match this season. Roth put up three to go along with 26 assists, two blocks, and three kills on three attempts.

The Jets close the first half of the conference season Thursday against Arkansas-Fort Smith back at Fugate Gymnasium.
