HOW IT HAPPENED
-An even start to the game opened up into a number of chances for the Jets in the first half. DBU's Kaci Parks put a shot on goal that required a save out of Ashley Sweetnam, but Newman turned on the offense from there. Rosa Urista-Chico had one of the best chances for either side in the 22nd minute, as her shot from the top of the box rang off the crossbar.
-Vanessa Ortiz followed Urista-Chico's shot with a strike from just inside the box, drawing Patriot goalkeeper Hope Koym into a diving save, and Lexi Clark forced Koym to move off her line again in the 27th.
-Newman closed the half on a flurry as well, with Sheree Molina turning on the right side and ripping one at Koym from a sharp angle in the 38th, and Urista-Chico putting one on frame 20 seconds later. Kaitlyn Logan chipped one aiming for the upper 90, but her shot slid just high in the 39th to keep things scoreless at the break.
-Action migrated to the midfield for the first 25 minutes of the second half, with both teams limited dangerous opportunities. Urista-Chico put a shot on goal in the 74th, forcing the keeper to smother the ball, but from there, the Jets were stuck thwarting chances by DBU. Sweetnam came up big on a number of occasions late in the half, sprawling for four saves over a five-minute span to hold it to 0-0.
-With the Patriots scoring late, Newman had to move quick to try to pick up an equalizer, and they got a chance, as a ball suck through to Caitlin Davis with less than a minute left, but skipped past the post just ahead of her to force a goal kick, and the Patriots kept the ball out of danger for the final seconds to secure the win.
NOTES
-The Jets outshot the Patriots 6-3 in the first half, and put up six shots on goal to the hosts' seven for the game.
-Sweetnam made six saves on the night, one shy of her season high.
