TOPEKA, Kan. —The Newman women's basketball team lost a tough game on the road Saturday, 72-62 to St. Cloud State. The Jets were looking to bounce back after a loss on the first day of the Parrish Hotels Thanksgiving Classic.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (5-4) were looking at a six-point deficit after Iva Krstevska hit a 3-pointer with 3:19 left in the fourth quarter against the Huskies (3-1). The quarter was winding down and the Jets were trying to continue to get back into the game late, but the Huskies kept up their dominance and were able to extend their lead and get the victory over the Jets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-In the first quarter, the teams were neck-and-neck with the time running down, without one team controlling the other. The Jets would get help from Abbey George, Dede Johnson, and Hannah Alexander, who lead the Jets' charge, bringing them within one to close the quarter.
-In the middle of the second quarter, the teams were tied at 23-each, looking to gain an advantage going into halftime. Alexander would continue her dominance in the first half, hitting a jumper with 16 seconds left to go into the half tied at 28.
-During the middle of the third quarter, the game was still close with each team playing tough, looking to gain an advantage. Nia Roberts and Erica Olerich would help this quarter, getting assists and hustle points wherever they could to give the Jets energy, keeping the game close to close the quarter.
-The fourth quarter began with the Huskies holding on to an eight-point lead and the Jets trying to get back into it. Alexander and Roberts would continue to hit some clutch shots to keep the game as close as they could, and Alexander would add on to her big game in the fourth, scoring when she could, but the Huskies continued their dominance that would lead to the victory.
NOTES
-The Jets were able to dominate the paint game, leading the game with second-chance points.
-Alexander was able to seemingly score at will, getting a season-high 26, which is her highest point total since January 21, 2017, when she scored 33 against St. Mary's.
