Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Jets Set Program Records In Rout Of OPSU

GOODWELL, Okla. — A hot start shot the Newman men's basketball team out to a big lead early, and it cruised to a 105-66 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State on a record-breaking day in Heartland Conference play Saturday afternoon.

KEY SEQUENCE

The Jets (8-15, 6-8 Heartland) never trailed in the game, but up by just five early, they reeled off a 30-8 run over seven minutes to turn that into a 27-point lead against the Aggies (5-18, 0-14 Heartland). A brief stretch saw the hosts answering Newman, but the Jets bookended the run with spurts of 10-0 at the start and 11-0 at the end.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Newman converted on its first three shots of the day, with Kevin Bryant, Daniel Green and Daniel Nwosu Jr. putting the Jets up 6-0 in the first two minutes. After OPSU kept it close over the next three minutes, the Jets rattled off 10 straight points to push the lead into double digits at 21-6.

-The Jets had only increased their lead by one point by the time the clock ticked under the halfway point of the opening half, but hot shooting from beyond the arc changed that quickly. Christian DeYoung, Taylor Schieber and Nwosu each hit a 3-pointer to make it a 41-14 lead by the 7:25 mark.

-A dunk from Green followed by another triple from DeYoung with 1:38 left in the half bumped it over a 30-point margin at 51-20, and the same combo a minute later made it 56-21 before free throws on both sides of halftime momentarily cut it to 31.

-The Aggies got hot for a short stretch early in the second half, and were able to cut the lead back down to 26 at 71-45, but the Jets got 3-pointers out of Wilson and Damien Akao to key an 8-0 run that shot it back out to 34. Newman never led by fewer than 32 the rest of the way, and pushed the margin into the 40s on Wilson's trey that made it 90-50 with 8:25 left.

-Each team cleared their benches with five minutes remaining, with Matthew Green, Anthony Harvey Jr. and Aaron Samuels all adding buckets in the final minutes.

NOTES

-Newman's key stretch was bolstered by high-percentage shooting, as the Jets got just one turnover out of the Aggies, but shot 6-of-12 from deep and 11-of-20 overall during a run that covered 7:43. Seven different players scored during the stretch, led by Nwosu's eight.

-The Jets scored 100 for the fifth time this season, and the 39-point margin of victory is the largest in conference play for Newman since moving to Division II.

-Newman converted 20 3-pointers — 10 in each half — to match the program's single-game record in the DII era. The mark is the second best in Heartland Conference history, just one off the all-time best, and tied for the seventh-best single-game mark in the country this season.

-Kevin Bryant snagged 12 rebounds to go with his seven points. Wilson hit five 3s and posted a career-high 15 points.

The Jets start their final roadtrip of the regular season next week, beginning with a contest at Lubbock Christian Thursday.
