WICHITA, Kan. — Closing the weekend as strong as they opened it, the Newman men's and women's tennis teams took care of business against Tabor, each moving to 2-0 in the spring season Saturday at West Genesis.
The Newman men blanked the Blue Jays (0-1) 9-0, winning two doubles matches and three singles matches without dropping a game. Eduardo Santos was involved in the two longest matches of the day, teaming up with Alejandro Gonzalez for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, then following with a marathon 6-4, 5-7, 14-12 victory over Tabor's Illia Filanchuk, who is ranked 16th in the country in NAIA.
The Jet women turned back Tabor (0-1) 8-1, not dropping a set in the eight points they won. Janneke de Rijk moved to 4-0 in the spring with wins at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for the second straight day. Tamar Tskhakaia fell in a close 7-5, 6-2 match at No. 1 singles to the seventh-ranked NAIA player in the country in Jessica Emoto.
The women head to Missouri Western for their first Division II competition of the season next weekend, facing three tough teams. The men will stay home for a pair of exhibitions against Cowley County CC and Seward County CC.
