WICHITA, Kan. – As the regular season comes to a close this weekend, the Newman women's basketball team is set to host St. Mary's Thursday and Texas A&M International Saturday at Fugate Gymnasium.
This week is
homecoming week on campus, there will be events during both games this weekend. On Thursday of the women's halftime Newman's honor roll student-athletes will be recognized. Also, during the men's halftime on Thursday the homecoming king and queen will be revealed. On Saturday Jet seniors on the men and women's basketball teams, along with cheer and dance members will be recognized between the men and women's basketball games.
SCOUTING NEWMAN
The Jets (17-9, 7-7 Heartland) traveled down to Lubbock, Texas to take on Lubbock Christian for their lone conference game of the week on Thursday. Newman and the Chaparrals battled for four quarters but Lubbock Christian defeated the Jets 60-55.

The Rattlers (19-5, 11-3 Heartland) took on Texas A&M International on Saturday in Laredo, Texas and cruised to an 86-46 victory over the Dustdevils. Before the game on Saturday St. Mary's hosted St. Edward's back on Feb. 11 for its final home game and defeated the Hilltoppers 72-48.

The Dustdevils (2-22, 2-12 Heartland) squared up against St. Mary's Saturday for their final home game of the season and fell 86-46. The previous game before that was against Oklahoma Christian on Feb. 11 at home but the Eagles defeated Texas A&M International 73-58.

HISTORY LESSON
The Rattlers hold a 15-7 all-time series record over the Jets dating back to the 2007-08 season. Newman and St. Mary's last met on Jan. 21 of this season down in San Antonio, Texas, which the Rattlers prevailed in a close 67-65 contest.
Texas A&M International holds an 11-8 all-time series over Newman. The Jets won the previous matchup earlier this season on Jan. 19 down in Laredo, Texas, beating the Dustdevils 67-48.
NOTES
-Newman has locked up the sixth seed for the 2017 Heartland Conference Tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This is back-to-back seasons for the Jets in making the postseason tournament.
-If the Jets cap their season with two wins this weekend, it will be the third most wins in a season for Newman during Division II era and give them a chance for a 20 win season for the first time since 2011-12.
