SHAWNEE, Okla. — Closing a stretch of facing three top-26 opponents in eight days, the Newman men's tennis team finished its spring break roadtrip with a pair of tough matchups this weekend.
The No. 43 Jets (8-5) started its tough stretch with a 6-3 defeat at the hands of No. 26 Western New Mexico Friday afternoon. The match was just about as close as it could be, with four singles matches going to a third set and Eduardo Santos and Alejandro Gonzalez nearly knocking off the No. 3 doubles team in the country in a 9-8 (7-5) match.
Diego Rojo and Felipe Batistella grabbed a doubles win, Rojo did the same at No. 4 singles, and Santos earned a 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1.
Newman didn't get a break Saturday against No. 21 Midwestern State, falling 8-1. Santos won the marquee match of the day though, besting Ramon Toyos, the No. 9 singles player in the country, in a marathon match, winning 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (6-8), 10-6.
The Jets are back at home for their next two matches, beginning Friday against No. 46 Oklahoma Baptist.
