Jets Grab Split On Road At Augustana

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Heading north for its first true road games of the season, the Newman baseball team split a doubleheader, playing a pair of tight games against Augustana Saturday afternoon.

The Jets (6-8) scored all of their runs in a two-inning burst to earn a 7-3 victory in the opener, while a high-scoring affair early turned into a 9-6 win for the Vikings (3-7) in the nightcap.

Newman struck with four runs in the fourth inning of the first game of the day to go out in front. Brian Canfield launched a solo home run to right to get things started, and Rene Rivera drove Aaron Mack in with a double. A pair of Augustana miscues helped plate two more and give the Jets a lead they would not relinquish.

After the hosts plated three in the bottom of the fourth to pull within one, Newman shot right back out with three insurance runs in the top of the fifth, as a Canfield fielder's choice and a Paul Rupnik groundout scored runs. Canfield came around to score on a passed ball to close the scoring.

The Jets managed just four hits in the game, and took advantage of four Augustana errors. Kane McCarthy got the win by tossing 2 1/3 hitless innings of relief.

A back-and-fourth second game didn't take as long to get going, as the Vikings got on the board in the first on a balk. Nick Griffin didn't take long to answer either, leading off the second with a solo home run to tie it, and Ked Bailey singled up the middle with two outs to give the Jets a 2-1 lead.

Augustana scored four in the bottom half of the frame, but a two-run double from Mack in the third slashed away at that deficit. Trailing 5-4 in the fourth, Channing Williams chopped one through the right side to plate Jacob Hamerle and tie the game up once again.

A big inning in the fifth pushed the Vikings back in front, and despite another run from Newman in the top of the seventh, it couldn't close the gap any closer than three down the stretch.

Seven Jets posted a hit and the top six batters in the lineup each scored a run, while Mack finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

The two teams conclude their series with a single game at noon Sunday.
