TOPEKA, Kan. — Continuing a tough nonconference schedule, the Newman men's and women's tennis teams each fell on the road at Washburn Saturday afternoon.
The Jet women (2-5) went back and forth with the Ichabods (5-2) in an eventual 5-4 match. Janneke de Rijk and Marit Lemmens held tough against the No. 12 doubles team in the country, and Kateryna Stoianova and Niamh Packer worked for an 8-4 win at No. 2 to narrow the hosts' lead to 2-1 entering singles.
There, Stoianova, Packer and Lemmens each earned wins, with Stoianova earning a three-set win at No. 2 and Lemmens drawing her team even at 4-4 with one court left at No. 4. Washburn would grab that final singles point and the victory, though.
The Jet men (4-2) had a tall task against the No. 36 Ichabods (7-1), and trailed 3-0 after three close doubles matches. Alejandro Gonzalez gutted out a three-set win at No. 2 singles, and Diego Rojo eased to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4, but Washburn managed to grab the rest, including a matchup of top-40 individuals as Alejandro Valarezo Plaza took three sets to top Eduardo Santos.
Newman is back home, and outdoors for the first time this spring, this weekend, hosting Colorado Mesa Friday at Riverside Park.
