WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman baseball team completed its home-and-home series with Northwestern Oklahoma State Tuesday evening at McCarthy field, which resulted in a decisive 12-3 victory for the home team.
The Jets (16-19) took the Rangers (11-27) down 1-2-3 to start off the game in top of the first with quality pitching coming from starter
Wade Winter. Newman would score the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning, coming from a
Brian Canfield double to left center that scored
Ked Bailey from second base to make the score 1-0, after one complete inning.
Northwestern Oklahoma State responded with two runs of its own in the top of the second to steal the lead at 2-1, heading into the bottom of the second. The Jets didn't waste anytime in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs to take back the lead at 4-2.
Rene Rivera had an RBI groundout that scored
Daniel Jahnke from third base for the first run of the bottom of the second. Back-to-back walks for the Jets loaded the bases up for Canfield and he didn't disappoint, smacking the ball to left field to drive in
Paul Rupnik and Bailey to make the score 4-2.
The Rangers added another run in the top of the third inning to cut into the Jet lead at 4-3. Newman broke the game open by scoring six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, which made the score 10-3, after four complete innings.
Channing Williams, Canfield and Rivera each had an RBI in the bottom of the fourth, while the other three runs in the inning were on wild pitches from the Ranger pitchers.
Newman tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning when
Aaron Mack sent a ball screaming over the right center fence, to push the Jet lead out to 12-3 late in the contest.
The Newman pitchers and fielders held Northwestern Oklahoma State scoreless throughout the final six innings of the game, helping secure the 12-3 victory. The five Jet pitchers that saw action this evening tallied at least one strikeout, with
Trey Tucker and Garett Hammond leading the way with three strikeouts each.
Canfield had himself quite a game from the plate, going 4-of-5 with four RBIs, one run and two doubles to lead the Jets offensively.
Newman is back in action at home this weekend for a three-game Heartland Conference series against Oklahoma Christian, starting Thursday at 3 p.m.
