EMPORIA, Kan. — Playing their penultimate matches of the regular season, the Newman men's and women's tennis teams split on the road with Emporia State Tuesday.
The Jet men (9-9) built a lead with a sweep of doubles action, as Eduardo Santos and Blake Crawford won in a tiebreak at No. 2 against the Hornets (10-5), and Newman went on to sweep the top four singles courts to ease to a 7-2 victory.
Felipe Batistella and Lucas Norbiato each won in third-set tiebreaks, with Norbiato needing to go to 12-10 to earn the win.
The Jet women (4-16) won four of the six singles matches against the Hornets (7-8), but three tight wins from the hosts in doubles proved to be the difference. Tamar Tskhakaia won in a tie break in the first set then breezed to the win at No. 2 singles, 7-6 (8-6), 6-0, while Kateryna Stoianova and Mariana Guvaria both won in straight sets.
Newman closes its regular season with another roadtrip, facing Northwest Missouri State Friday.
