Newman Clips Cardinals At Home To Begin Week

WICHITA, Kan. – On a windy Wednesday afternoon at McCarthy Field, the Newman baseball team took on William Jewell for a midweek nonconference game and won 12-9 in front of the home crowd.

Both the Jets (18-21) and Cardinals (16-18) held each other scoreless in the first inning of the game, but Newman put up a six-run bottom of the second to go up 6-0 early on. Nick Griffin hit a solo home run to right center for the first run in the inning.

Later in the bottom of the second inning, the bases would be loaded for Ked Bailey and he hit a single through the left side of the infield to drive in two more runs for the Jets. The following at-bat Brian Canfield sent a ball well over the left field fence for a three-run home run to complete the scoring for Newman in the bottom of the second.

William Jewell got on the scoreboard for the first time in the top of the third inning to cut into the Jet lead at 6-2. Newman added three more runs to its lead in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 9-2, after four complete innings. Aaron Mack took one for the team with the bases loaded with two outs to drive in the first run in the bottom of the fourth and the following at-bat Griffin singled, which got the last two Jet runners home in the fourth.

The Cardinals added two more runs in the top of the fifth, which put the score at 9-4 but Newman would put another run on the board in the bottom of the sixth to make it 10-4, after six complete innings.

William Jewell narrowed the Jet lead to 10-7, after scoring three runs in the top of the seventh. However, Mack would homer to right center field in the bottom of the seventh to extend Newman's lead back out to five runs at 12-7, heading into the eighth inning.

The Cardinals did not go away though scoring two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to get within three runs at 12-9. William Jewell got a runner on base in the ninth with one out but it would not matter as Collin Loutensock struck out the final two batters to seal the 12-9 victory for Newman.

Four Jet batters had multiple RBIs in today's game, with Canfield, Griffin and Mack each tied with three RBIs for the day.

Newman is back in action on Friday and Saturday at Lubbock Christian, for a three-game weekend Heartland Conference series.
