LIBERTY, Mo. – Moving its game up a day, the Newman baseball team traveled to William Jewell Tuesday afternoon for a midweek nonconference game, but dropped a close 7-6 game on the road.
Brian Canfield singled to center field for the first hit of the day for the Jets (18-25) in the top of the first inning with one out, but could not advance any further as the first inning ended. The Cardinals (18-21) got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.
All would be quiet in the second inning for both teams but Newman evened up the score in the top of the third at 3-3.
Aaron Mack doubled down the right field line to score Canfield for the first Jet run of the inning. Mack made his way to third base two at-bats later from a
Channing Williams single and then scored on an error from a Cardinal fielder the following at-bat.
Jordan Doan drove in Williams for the final run in the inning off a double to right center field to make it 3-3.
Newman broke the tie in the top of the fourth inning, off a Canfield single to left field that plated
Jacob Hamerle from second base, to put the score at 4-3.
Nick Griffin singled up the middle two at-bats later to score Canfield from second base to push the Jet lead out to 5-3, heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Hamerle got on base by getting hit by a pitch in the top of the sixth, he would then steal second base to get into scoring position for the Jets. With one out in the inning, Mack singled to left field to score Hamerle to extend Newman's lead to 6-3.
William Jewell cut into the Jet lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two runs to make the score 6-5, after six complete innings. The Cardinals would even the score up at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh.
Ked Bailey singled with one out in the top of the eighth to reach base and the following at-bat Canfield singled to left field to get Bailey into scoring position and have two runners on base with only one out. Back-to-back outs would end the top of the eighth inning with Bailey stranded at second base.
William Jewell broke the deadlock in the bottom of the eighth, scoring one run to take a 7-6 lead into the final inning. The Jets could not get anything going in the top of the ninth and fell 7-6 on the road to begin the week.
Canfield went 4-of-5 from the plate with one RBI, two runs and one triple to his stat line.
Newman is back in action for its final home Heartland Conference series this weekend at McCarthy Field.
