WICHITA, Kan. — Going up against yet another ranked opponent, the Newman men's and women's tennis teams both fell in close matches to Cameron Monday afternoon at Riverside Park.
The No. 43 Jet men (8-7) nearly completed a big comeback against the No. 25 Aggies (11-9), falling 5-4. After Cameron earned a 2-1 lead from doubles, Eduardo Santos picked up a straight-set win over Vinicius Santos, the No. 50 singles player in the country.
Down 4-2 with the final three singles matches hitting the court, the Aggies picked up the clinching point at No. 5 to seal the win, although Diego Rojo and Blake Crawford gutted out three-set wins to keep the pressure on.
The Jet women (4-13) got the benefit of two points from default off the bat, but the No. 24 Aggies (9-9) picked up a tight win at top doubles and the first three singles matches to grab the needed five points.
Niamh Packer charged back after falling in a close first set at No. 4 singles, eventually benefitting from her opponent retiring to pick up a win.
Newman will play the rest of its schedule on the road, beginning this weekend by finishing its Heartland Conference slate by facing St. Mary's and St. Edward's on Friday and Saturday in Dallas.
