DALLAS — Facing another tough task as they started their final weekend of Heartland Conference play, the Newman men's and women's tennis teams fell to nationally-ranked St. Mary's squads Friday.
The No. 43 Jet men (8-8, 2-1 Heartland) got off to a good start despite having to reshuffle the lineup due to injury, as Eduardo Santos and Blake Crawford snagged an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles and Enrique Coiras and Diego Rojo won 8-2 at No. 3 to stake Newman to a 2-1 lead.
Blake Crawford added a point in singles play, winning 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 at No. 6, but the No. 22 Rattlers (14-6, 3-0 Heartland) earned wins at the other five singles spots to earn a 6-3 win.
The Jet women (4-18, 0-3 Heartland) had a tough task in the No. 12 Rattlers (13-2, 3-0 Heartland), putting up a fight, but falling 9-0.
Newman faces its final conference opponent of the season Saturday, meeting St. Edward's back in Dallas.
