LAREDO, Texas – The Newman baseball team completed its final Heartland Conference series and also its final game of the season against Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon, taking the series finale 3-0 to sweep the host team for the weekend.
The Jets (21-28, 8-16 Heartland) starting pitcher for the final game was
Samuel Hersh, tossing eight scoreless innings, striking out three Dustdevil (12-32, 6-18 Heartland) batters and only allowing one hit in an outstanding final performance to the season.
Newman got on the scoreboard in the top of the first, when
Channing Williams singled through the left side of the infield with two outs to drive in
Ked Bailey from second base to make the score 1-0 to begin the contest.
Both teams were quiet offensively throughout the second, third and fourth innings with only two runners getting on base for either team during that stretch. The Jets scored two runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead out to 3-0.
Jacob Hamerle singled up the middle with one out in the top of the fifth to get on base. The following at-bat Bailey was hit by a pitch to get on, also advancing Hamerle into scoring positon to second. Two at-bats later with two outs in the inning,
Aaron Mack delivered a deep double to right field to score Hamerle and Bailey to make it 3-0.
The sixth, seventh and eighth innings would fly by for both teams with only four runners getting on base during that timeframe for either team.
Garrett Hammond came in for the Jets in the bottom of the ninth inning to close out the game. He would shut down the Dustdevils in the ninth to secure the 3-0 shutout in favor of Newman and also recorded his first save of the season.
The two hits allowed for the Jet pitching staff is tied for a season-best for a game which came against East Central back on February 3, in the opening weekend tournament.
