Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo. — The Newman tennis teams closed out the first weekend of dual matches of the season Sunday, with the women starting the year unbeaten with an 8-1 win over Colorado State-Pueblo.
The Jets (3-0) swept through singles action after going 2-1 in doubles against the Thunderwolves (0-5), with Janneke de Rijk toughing out a first set before rolling at No. 1, and Emily Young dropping just one game at No. 5.
Vlada Litvinova, Kateryna Stoianova, Niamh Packer, and Young all went 3-0 in singles action over the weekend, and Young also went unbeaten in doubles to go 6-0 overall.
The Jet men (2-1) fell 6-3 to the Thunderwolves (3-2). With the team shorthanded due to illness, Newman fell in three matches that went to tiebreakers. Blake Crawford grabbed a tight 7-5, 7-6 (10-4) win at No. 3 singles, and Lauri Soome blew through his opponent 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 to complete a 3-0 weekend.
The Jets have a week off before heading to the biggest individual tournament of the season, the ITA South Central Regional on Sept. 28-Oct. 1.
