WICHITA, Kan. — Wrapping up a busy stretch before heading into February, the Newman wrestling team welcomes No. 20 Lindenwood to Fugate Gymnasium Friday before making the quick turnaround to host the Kansas Cup Sunday.
SCOUTING NEWMAN
The Jets (2-3, 0-2 MIAA) will have wrestled five duals and a tournament during a nine-day stretch by the end of Sunday. They went 2-1 at the Midwest Duals on Saturday, and are coming off a tough 33-6 defeat at the hands of No. 10 Central Oklahoma Wednesday night. That match saw Tyler Mies knock off a nationally ranked opponent and a number of near-misses for the Jets.
SCOUTING THE LIONS (Friday, 7 p.m.)
Lindenwood (4-2, 0-0 MIAA) will be opening up conference play Friday evening. The Lions were also at the Midwest Duals, going 3-1 with wins over Adams State, Northern State and Mary, and a 22-20 loss to San Francisco State.
9TH ANNUAL KANSAS CUP (Sunday, 9 a.m.)
The Kansas Cup returns to Fugate Gymnasium Sunday, as 14 of the 17 collegiate wrestling programs in the state converge for an action packed day. Eight junior colleges, four NAIA and two Division II schools will wrestle throughout the day, capping the action with the finals, which are expected to begin at approximately 3 p.m.
IN THE RANKINGS
Noel Torres slid to No. 11 at 184 in the latest NWCA rankings, which came out today. The senior is unbeaten since first appearing in the rankings three weeks ago. Dalton Weidl hung onto his No. 8 spot at 285 despite an overtime loss to UCO's No. 6 Caleb Cotter Wednesday. The Jets are still in the receiving votes section of the team ranks.
Lindenwood comes in at No. 20 as a team, with three ranked individuals. No. 4 Carlos Jacquez is at 125, No. 8 Hunter Haralson at 133, and at 285, Weidl will get another tough bout against No. 12 Jacob Borgmeyer.
Action at the Kansas Cup will feature two teams receiving votes in the DII poll in Newman and Fort Hays State, as well as three ranked wrestlers. Eight individuals are in the top 20 in their weight class from the NAIA teams that will be in attendance, and five teams and 10 individuals appearing in the NJCAA ranks.
