WICHITA, Kan. — Answering the call after going down early, the Newman wrestling team blitzed through the final six bouts of the night to complete a comeback 19-18 victory over No. 20 Lindenwood Friday night at Fugate Gymnasium.
Four of those final six were decided by two or fewer points, as the Jets (3-3, 1-2 MIAA) put together an impressive run to secure their first MIAA dual victory in their fifth season as an associate member of the league.
A number of exciting matches led up to it, but the biggest meeting of the night was the finale at 285 pounds, where Newman's No. 8 Dalton Weidl met Lindenwood's No. 12 Jake Borgmeyer with the winner securing the victory for his team.
After a scoreless first period, the two heavyweights traded escapes in the second and third to head into extra time. Sudden victory didn't decide a winner, but after Weidl took a 2-1 lead in the first 30-second tiebreaker, he survived a flurry of action in the second tiebreak period to maintain control and secure the victory.
The Lions (4-3, 0-1 MIAA) shot out to an 18-0 lead as they looked to secure their fifth straight win in the series. Newman's Tyler Lawley fought hard at 125 to start the night, but allowed two takedowns in the third period to No. 4 Carlos Jacquez.
Tyler Mies flipped the momentum at 157, rolling up over four minutes of riding time in a crucial 9-1 major decision. Kyle Ryan survived a four-point move in the third period to slip by 7-6 at 165, and the train kept rolling for the Jets.
Nate Panagakis tossed Sam Pennington to his back for a takedown and two back points, then rode him out to tie it up and send it to overtime at 174. There, the freshman got in on a high single and finished off the takedown in sudden victory to suddenly have Newman in reach at 18-10.
Noel Torres, ranked No. 11 at 184, put in a workmanlike 2-0 win, riding out the third period to make it 18-13 and require the Jets win the final two bouts of the night.
At 197, Jacob Stoneberger did his part, putting together a 15-8 win that was far more exciting than its seven-point spread. Tied 4-4 after one period against Jared McKindley, Stoneberger fought off his back and out of a cradle in the second, and broke an 8-8 tie in the third using a headlock to an underhook for a six-point move.
That made it 18-16, and set the stage for the thrills at 285.
The Jets look to maintain that momentum Sunday, as they host the 9th Annual Kansas Cup right back at Fugate Gymnasium.
