Jets Keep Postseason Hopes Alive with 2-1 Win Over Rogers State

WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman University men's soccer team kept their postseason hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over Rogers State Thursday night (Oct. 25). The Jets improve to 9-7-1 overall and 6-6-1 in the Heartland.

The Jets offense was clicking early on in the contest dominating the time of possession from the get go. Andreas Agrell opened the scoring in the 10th minute beating the Hillcats keeper far post off a short corner cross sent in from Davide Panucci, giving the Jets a 1-0 lead.

The Jets passing continued to stay on point in the 16th minute when back-to-back passes from Ed Jabbari and Tommy Fiszel setup Ignacio Lerech's fifth goal of the year. Lerech beat the Hillcats keeper in front of the net putting the Jets up 2-0 in the 16th minute. The Jets took the 2-0 lead into the half, outshooting the Hillcats 6-5 in the first half.

The Jets saw their lead dwindle in half 2-1, in the 55th minute as the Hilltops Chris Sowder connected on a header inside the near post off a free kick.

The Jets defense and goalkeeper Jean Claude Consol got a timely break in the 71st minute as the Hillcats looked to even the match on a shot that ricocheted off the cross bar. The Jets defense continued to limit the Hillcats scoring chances not allowing another shot the rest of the way, leading to a much needed 2-1 victory.

The Jets will wrap up their regular season on Saturday (Oct. 27) against St. Mary's. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. from Wilkins Field in Wichita, KS.
