WICHITA FALLS, Texas. — The Newman University women's basketball team extended their win streak to two straight games Friday afternoon (Nov. 16) with a dominating 92-42 victory over Dallas Christian in the first game of the MSU Ashbrook Classic. The Jets improved to 2-1 on the season with the victory.
Sophomore guard, Rylee Meloy set the tone early for the Jets scoring five of the first seven points to open the contest forcing Dallas Christian to burn a quick timeout just 1:12 into the contest.
Dallas Christian's Dezeray Wesley ended the Jets 8-0 run sinking a three pointer with 7:00 to play in the first quarter. Newman grabbed a double digit lead after back-to-back three pointers from guard Kaitlyn Potter and forward Hailey Albers sparking an 11-0 run. Newman's defense held Dallas Christian scoreless for the final 5:36 of the quarter, leading after the first quarter 25-8.
Bria DeGrate continued the Jets run completing a three point play just 47 seconds into the second quarter. Shabria Walters ended the Jets 16-0 run along with ending Dallas Christian's 9:37 scoring drought, cutting the Newman lead down to 20 with 5:59 to play in the first half. Newman's pressure on defense continued to cause havoc for Dallas Christian, as the Jets outscored the Crusaders 20-4 in the second quarter, taking a 45-12 lead into the locker room. The Jets came away with 13 first half steals, forcing 20 first half Crusader turnovers.
Both teams started out sloppy to begin the second half as the two teams combined for six turnovers in the first 2:14. The third quarter became the Haley Albers show as she recorded three of her seven points in the third quarter during a Newman 7-0 run. The Jets took a 67-24 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Crusaders offense started to come alive opening the fourth on an 8-1 run. Sophomore guard, Braxtyn Stewart had the answer back for the Jets, scoring nine of her 11 total points in the quarter. Newman went on to outscore Dallas Christian 25-18 in the final quarter.
All 12 Jets recorded a point in the scorebooks, while DeGrate led the Jets in scoring for the third consecutive game. Potter, Stewart and Albers all scored in double figures for the Jets. DeGrate, Johnson and George all recorded three steals a piece.
The Jets defense held Dallas Christian to 14 of 49 from the field for a percentage of 28.6 percent for the game. The Jets scored 29 points off 32 Crusader turnovers.
The Jets wrap up the MSU Ashbrook Classic tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against Texas Wesleyan.
