WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman men's basketball team used a 12-2 second half run capping off a 68-58 win over Emporia State Saturday afternoon (Nov. 17). The Jets improved to 2-2 on the year and extend their win streak to two straight games.
Offense was hard to come by early in the contest as the two teams went scoreless for the first 3:23 to begin the game. Marshawn Blackmon recorded the first field goal of the game with 16:01 to play in the first half giving the Jets the 3-2 early advantage.
The Jets trailed 6-5 with 12:53 to play in the first half until redshirt-sophomore Allen Wilson sparked the offense coming off the bench laying in a contested reverse layup that started an 8-3 run.
Junior Marshawn Blackmon continued his early season success late in the first half recording 10 of his 19 first half points in a span of 3:19.
Newman's defensive pressure was key in getting the offense started holding the Hornets offense to just 36-percent shooting from the floor and 12.5-percent from behind the three-point line in the first half. The Jets recorded nine first half steals off 15 Hornets turnovers. Newman took a 37-28 lead into the halftime break.
Midway through the second half, the Hornets cut the Jets lead to 42-40 with 12:57 to play. Much like the first half the Jets' relied back to big man Marshawn Blackmon. Blackmon went on his own 5-0 run hitting a top of the key three-pointer pushing the Jets back out front by seven.

Allen Wilson continued to provide the Jets with quality minutes off the bench knocking down a corner trey extending the 8-0 Jets run. The Jets would not look back cruising to the 68-58 victory.
The Jets defense forced 20 Hornets turnovers, tying the season high for turnovers forced in a game. Newman's defense held the Hornets to just 2 of 19 from behind the three-point line.
Marshawn Blackmon finished with a game high 26 points and 15 total rebounds, recording his second double-double of the season. Blackmon has finished all four games scoring in double figures.
Senior guard Ben Ayre added in a season high 14 points and dished out four assists, while recording three steals.
The Jets return to the floor on Tuesday evening (Nov. 20) against Fort Hays State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. inside Fugate Gym in Wichita, KS.
