WICHITA FALLS, Texas — The Newman University men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat Friday evening (Nov. 2) to #6 Midwestern State in the Heartland Conference Semifinals.
The Jets could not have asked for a better start Friday evening (Nov. 2) as sophomore forward, Ignacio Lerech put home a rebound shot inside the 18' beating the Mustangs keeper far left post giving the Jets the early, 1-0 advantage.

The Jets defensive line was pressured by the Mustangs deadly attack for much of the first half. The Mustangs offensive pressure evened the match, 1-1 with a 1:05 left in the half on a rebound deflection off the left post.
The Jets' offense was hard to come by in the second half much like the first half. MSU continued to pressure the Jets defensive back line. In the 65th minute, Victor Rubio Lopez misfired wide right, from just outside the 18'.
In the 79th minute, the Mustangs took advantage of a Jets defensive breakdown, gaining the 2-1 lead on a lob shot from 8' out. The Mustangs tacked on an insurance goal, 3-1 in the 85th minute putting the game out of reach.
The Jets finished a remarkable season going 11-8-1, the most wins since the 2014 season. The Jets closed their season winning 8 of their final 12 games, securing a first round home playoff game entering the Heartland Conference Tournament.
