Jets Fall in Season Finale 3-0 to Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas — The Newman University volleyball team couldn't keep pace with the Heartland Conference regular season champions Lubbock Christian, on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 3), falling in straight sets (25-17, 25-19, 25-18).

The Jets came out flat footed in the first set falling behind 6-2 early on. The Jets cut the Chaparrals lead to 13-10 after kills by Yemima Buana and Hailey Braddy giving the Jets some momentum. The teams traded point for point until 18-15 before the Chaparrals closed the first set on a 7-2 run taking the first set 25-17. The two sides played a pretty mistake-free first set, as each side only committed four errors apiece.

The Jets came out firing in the second set after falling behind 3-1 early in the set. Yemima Buana recorded three of her five kills in the set jolting a 4-0 run putting the Jets out in front. Hailey Braddy recorded back-to-back kills keeping the Jets in-front 8-5, forcing Lubbock Christian to burn a quick timeout. The Jets momentum however quickly disappeared as Lubbock Christian used a 9-1 run midway through, gaining the lead back taking the second set 25-19, taking a 2-0 match lead.

Despite being in a 2-0 match hole, the Jets did not go away knocking punch for punch early in the first set. After Cassie Pauls recorded a kill evening the third set at 11-11, Hailey Braddy recorded back-to-back kills giving the Jets a 13-11 lead. LCU responded with a 6-1 lead taking a 17-14 lead. Kennadi Myers kept the Jets in the third set recording two kills cutting the LCU lead to 19-17. LCU responded with a 6-1 run to close out the match taking the third set 25-18.

Yemima Buana lead the Jets with 12 kills, adding 2 assisted blocks. Reagen Roth dished out a team high 31 assists in the match. 

The Jets season did not go as they had planned, but the Jets fought hard in each contest battling all year wrapping the 2018 season 2-25 overall and finishing conference play 1-11.
